When it comes to preventive care, it takes both your own efforts at home, and a visit to our office at Parkland Smile Dental every six months to get the best results. In addition to a complete dental exam to check for cavities and treat them promptly, cleanings are key for avoiding both cavities and gum disease.
At home, you should avoid sugars and starches to the greatest extent possible, They are both catalysts for the development of dental plaque, the invisible bacterial film that grows on teeth and at the gum line. It is responsible for tooth decay and the cavities that result. It is also the reason why gum disease takes hold. Take care to brush when you wake up, and then again before bed, at which time you should also floss thoroughly. It would be fantastic if you could be certain of getting all of the plaque that way, but it is sneaky and hides, such as in gum pockets. It then hardens into tartar, for which the only effective treatment is our Hillhurst teeth cleaning. You can count on the eradication of your existing tartar buildup and any residual plaque, which prevents future cavities and gum disease. There’s an added benefit, though. If you have any of the signs of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, our Hillhurst teeth cleaning will reverse the effects (reddening, irritation) and thereby stop the progression of gum disease. And that is crucial, because the later stage, periodontitis, brings with it serious symptoms such as persistent bad breath, receding gums, bleeding when you brush, loss of gum and bone tissue, and even loose teeth.
While it’s on your mind, contact our office and set up a time to come in for a dental exam and our Hillhurst teeth cleaning for optimal preventive care.
