Extractions are done on patients who have cavities that have progressed to a state of extreme decay, or to make room for orthodontics such as braces. At Parkland Smile Dental, our Parkland extractions are done in a friendly and safe atmosphere. Extractions are done under general anesthesia where the patient is awake yet numb.
The early detection of gum disease, cavities and other oral problems is crucial to preventing future problems that can become complicated if not taken care of right away and that can lead to Parkland extractions. Annual x-rays are recommended to detect potential problems before they begin. For our younger patients, we recommend fluoride therapy and sealants, which are designed to act as a barrier to protect teeth. At Parkland Dental, we pride ourselves on instilling good dental habits in our patients by educating them on the best way to care for their teeth. That’s why we teach every patient how to care for teeth as well as give them individual attention.
Coming in for a cleaning at least once a year helps to combat bacteria that can cause plaque on the teeth which can also lead to Parkland extractions. This plaque cannot be removed with just regular brushing and flossing alone. Our dental office can get into the pockets between the teeth and gums to clean and rid them of excess food and bacteria. All of our patient’s complete dental exams include an oral cancer screening to check for any serious teeth and gum conditions, followed by a periodontal evaluation for healthy gums. Preventing gum disease starts with early detection, proper brushing and flossing to prevent bacteria and cavities, and yearly cleanings. A bite analysis should also be conducted to make sure the jaw and mouth are balanced and there are no issues with the joints in the jaw.
